Updated 3:10pm, Friday December 15: An elderly motorcyclist has died following a serious crash on a rural section of a Tasmanian highway this afternoon.
The 77-year-old man from Elliot, around 20 minutes south-west of Burnie, was riding on the Bass Highway at Brittons Swamp when he left the road.
Police say the man was treated by paramedics but sadly died at the scene shortly after 12:15pm on Friday.
“Crash investigators and forensic services … will be investigating [this crash] as we do with all other fatal motor vehicle accidents,” Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Craig Harvey said.
The man is the second motorcyclist to die on Tasmania’s road today, with another rider hit and killed on the nearby Murchison Highway earlier this morning.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Motorcyclist injured in serious crash on rural Bass Highway
12:30pm, Friday December 15: A motorcyclist has reportedly been injured after a serious crash in Tasmania’s far North-West this afternoon.
Police are asking motorists to avoid the area near Brittons Swamp around 24585 Bass Highway until the scene is cleared.
Pulse understands the motorcycle is the only vehicle involved in the incident.
It’s the second crash involving a motorcycle in Tasmania’s North-West today, with a person seriously injured after a 3 vehicle crash on the Murchison Highway this morning.
