A 21-year-old man will be fined after allegedly driving 37km/h over the speed limit through central Launceston during peak hour traffic.

Police intercepted the blue Subaru WRX around 8am today on Bathurst Street.

Police allege the car accelerated to 87km/h in a 50km/h zone as it travelled underneath the Paterson Street Bridge.

The driver, from Riverside, will receive a $639 fine and five demerit points.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said the location made the alleged speeding especially risky.

“Driving at high speed on any road is dangerous, but particularly so in the CBD where there is significant vehicles and pedestrians around,” the spokesperson said.

“Police will continue to conduct high visibility and covert patrols across the state focusing on dangerous driving behaviours, including speeding.”

“Please slow down, obey all speed limits and help keep our roads safe.”
