On what was Tasmania’s highest-rated fire weather day of the season so far this year, the state was hit by multiple vegetation fires and a large bushfire.

The bushfire broke out in the remote northwest corner of Cloudy Bay Lagoon on Bruny Island.

Emergency services raced to contain the flames as fire crews worked tirelessly to get good containment lines around the South Bruny fire, which burnt approximately 8 hectares.

Phil Smith, Regional Fire Controller of the Tasmania Fire Service, said a range of resources including fire trucks and aircraft were deployed to tackle the fire.

“We have had 40 people responding with 10 fire trucks, one dozer and three aircraft.”

Smith said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation and warned residents to remain vigilant as high fire danger ratings are predicted to continue in southern and central parts of the state.

“Tasmania will continue to see high fire danger ratings into Tuesday, particularly in southern and central parts of the state and potential for thunderstorms has also been forecast.”

“All Tasmanians should have a plan that sets out what they’ll do if bushfire threatens their property.”
