Multiple flights in and out of Tasmanian airports have been cancelled or delayed due to a global IT outage affecting Windows, reportedly caused by the CrowdStrike anti-virus software.

The disruptions began around 4pm on Friday, with Jetstar flight JQ706 from Hobart to Melbourne delayed for several hours before eventually departing at 9pm.

Several other Jetstar and Qantas flights have since been cancelled, stranding passengers intending to fly to Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.

Hobart Airport said the outage “impacted some airline operations, including check in procedures”.

Virgin Australia flights remained largely unaffected by the issue.

According to the Flightradar24 website, Jetstar flight JQ708 from Hobart to Melbourne was delayed by almost three hours, while all other Jetstar and Qantas departures from Hobart and Launceston scheduled for later this evening have been cancelled.

The first Qantas departure on Saturday morning to Melbourne has also been cancelled.
