A new 98-studio hotel has opened on Hobart’s waterfront, with global hospitality brand Citadines launching its first Tasmanian property at Elizabeth Street Pier.
The hotel, which is also the company’s Australian flagship, is located on the historic pier at Sullivans Cove.
Citadines says every studio offers “uninterrupted” views across the River Derwent, with each room featuring a balcony or outdoor terrace over the water.
The hotel replaces the former Somerset on Pier, which operated at Elizabeth Street Pier for more than a decade before the site underwent a major upgrade and rebrand.
The redevelopment formed part of a broader transformation of the waterfront precinct, which saw long-running hospitality venues including Billy’s Burgers and Bar close as the site shifted towards a new accommodation and dining offering.
The upgraded property expanded from 56 to 98 rooms as it transitioned into the Citadines brand.
The Ascott Limited Australasia Managing Director David Mansfield said the opening was a major milestone for the brand’s expansion in Australia.
“Citadines Elizabeth Street Pier Hobart has been designed as a gateway to Hobart’s iconic waterfront, as well as the city’s many cultural, culinary and natural attractions,” he said.
“The opening marks a significant step in Citadines’ expansion across the country and we’re incredibly proud to introduce our flagship Australian property in Tasmania – a destination that reflects our focus on meaningful connections to place, local character and authentic experiences.”
Business greater Hobart chair Edwin Johnstone described the hotel as a welcome vote of confidence in the city.
“At a time when parts of Hobart’s hospitality sector are under pressure, it is encouraging to see significant private investment in our waterfront and visitor economy,” he said.
“Investment like this supports local jobs, suppliers, hospitality businesses and the wider CBD economy.”
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the project had given new life to a heritage waterfront site.
“This significant investment has transformed the 1930s waterfront ‘finger wharf’ at Sullivans Cove, into a beautiful 98-room hotel,” she said.
“It would have to be one of the best new places to stay in Hobart.”
The hotel features five apartment-style room types, with the company saying every studio has waterfront views and a balcony or outdoor terrace.
It also includes a guest lounge, complimentary daily drinks sessions and in-room yoga.
A partnership with Pier Restaurant and Bar, due to launch later this year, will provide an all-day in-room dining menu showcasing Tasmanian produce.
