A new service station is set to be built on the East Derwent Highway at Lindisfarne, bringing the brand back to the area after a decade.

The site has been vacant since the former service station was demolished in 2011 and was approved for construction at Monday’s Clarence City Council meeting.

The new station will feature three petrol pumps, a convenience store, a coffee outlet and a carpark, with access points from both Lowanna Road and the highway.

Councillor Tony Mulder said the location is “perfect” for a service station due to its position at the junction of a highway and a side road.

“It’s a great place to have one,” he said.

“Most of us are sick to death of driving down our main streets, watching derelict sites and we’re having residents saying ‘Why doesn’t council do something?’.”

“I wholeheartedly endorse this. I wish them success.”

Councillor Beth Warren said she was disappointed that the station will only offer petrol pumps.

“I think this is possibly a missed opportunity for the developer to include some electric charge stations rather than just fossil fuels because that would give it a little bit more demand into the future,” she said.

The development is expected to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
