Queenstown may give Chris Fagan ‘the keys’ to his home town

West Coast Mayor Shane Pitt will ask council to consider a civic honour for Chris Fagan

Departing Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan could be given the keys to his home town of Queenstown, with West Coast Mayor Shane Pitt to ask council to consider a civic honour.

Pitt paid tribute to Fagan today, after the coach announced he would step down following Saturday’s grand final win, Brisbane’s third premiership in a row.

The mayor said he would ask the West Coast Council to consider “an appropriate recognition” for Fagan, such as the Keys to Queenstown.

No such award exists yet.

“That award does not currently exist as a civic honour, but a recognition of that kind would be fitting for a man who has done so much for our region through his deeds and actions,” Pitt said.

He said Fagan had made the community “so proud”.

“On behalf of the West Coast Council and our proud West Coast community, I pay tribute to Chris Fagan, who has announced he will step down as Brisbane coach after Saturday’s three-peat,” he said.

“From Queenstown-born to only the seventh VFL/AFL three-peat coach is truly elite.”

Pitt described Fagan as “a real role model for the young people of the West Coast”.

The mayor also pointed to the coach’s visit to the region after Brisbane’s 2024 premiership.

“None of us will forget when he brought the 2024 premiership cup home, that was a real measure of his generosity and sincerity,” he said.

Fagan was born in Queenstown and played in premierships with Hobart and Devonport before coaching at Melbourne and Hawthorn and joining Brisbane in 2017.
