Parts of Hobart’s Campbell Street are set to be reduced to two lanes to make way for a new inner-city cycleway.

The City of Hobart planning committee has given the green light to turn sections of Campbell, Argyle, Bathurst and Liverpool Streets into cycle lanes as part of a $1.725 million development project.

As part of this project, the current third lane on Campbell Street will be transformed into parking spaces, while the existing parking areas will be converted into a sheltered bike lane.

After completion, Campbell Street will function as a clearway from 4:30pm to 6pm, allowing the road to revert to its original three-lane configuration for an hour and a half each weekday.

“The proposal will involve only minor alterations to existing vehicle lanes and priority, and the relocation of most existing on-street car parking,” a spokesperson for the Council said.

“Minor upgrades at intersections by painting new markings and reconstructing kerbs and pedestrian bulbs to suit will provide connectivity, safety and clarity for all road users.”

Funding for this project comes from both the Tasmanian Government’s Vulnerable Road User Program and the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the trial was part of the plan to ease congestion and improve safety in the City by offering easier use of alternative forms of transport.

“We are approving and encouraging more residential apartment developments in central Hobart, and it is critical we provide improved choices for people to get around efficiently and safely in the city,” Mayor Reynolds said.

“Every resident who is choosing to ride a bike is one less car on the road, which means less congestion and less pollution for everyone.
