Live music will soon be allowed at venues in Salamanca for one afternoon each week after a trial period was successfully introduced by a Hobart City Alderman.
Marti Zucco proposed a motion to allow live music in Salamanca Place on Sundays between 12pm and 8pm during a council meeting on Monday night, saying it would prove attractive to both locals and tourists.
“I think this is one way of embracing what is well known as an area, which is an entertainment percent and a hospitality precinct,” Zucco said.
“This is the start of trying to do something to enhance our hospitality and entertainment percent and it’s not to take away from the people in Salamanca Square.”
Businesses participating in the trial will have to stick to specific noise levels and limits while collaborating with each other.
“If anyone breaches the decibels put forward, give me a call and I’ll go down there and I’ll unplug them myself,” Zucco told councillors.
Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said she supported the initiative, particularly in its potential to support local musicians.
“If this does help support the live music industry, the paying of musicians and there’s more gigs available, then I think it’s a positive thing,” Reynolds said.
The motion was moved unanimously, with the council now working to create a management plan for the year-long trial before mid-February.
