A man from Newstead has been caught allegedly speeding through roadworks at more than double the limit.

The 42-year-old was stopped by police on the East Tamar Highway at Long Reach this afternoon, with his vehicle alledgedly clocking 96km/h in a signposted 40km/h zone.

Inspector Aleena Crack said speeds like this in active roadwork zones pose a significant risk of serious injury and death to road workers and other road users.

“By targeting motorists travelling through roadworks we’re making sure the employees at those worksites get to go about their jobs in a safe environment,” she said.

“We’ll continue to target this sort of behaviour to make sure people are getting the message about being safe on our roads.”

The man will face a four-month driving disqualification, a $1,161.50 fine and the seizure of his vehicle.
