New police dogs to sniff out bombs and drugs across Tasmania

Tasmania Police have welcomed three new police dog recruits to the force.

The furry trio, Basil, Tilly and Nikki, graduated from their training this week and will be sworn in next week.

Each of the dogs has a specific role within the force, with Basil tasked with sniffing out firearms and explosives in Hobart.

Tilly will perform the same role in Devonport, while Nikki will assist in the fight against drugs in Launceston.

“Paws up for our new police dogs,” Tasmania Police wrote on social media.

“Meet the fur-tastic trio who are about to serve and paw-tect Tasmanians.”

The new recruits have received extensive training over the past several months to prepare them for their roles.

This includes learning how to detect the scent of firearms, explosives and various drugs.
