Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood has invited global pop star Katy Perry to visit Tasmania after a surprise encounter at the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne.
Perry, who performed as the game’s feature entertainment act on Saturday, greeted Garwood from a corporate suite at the MCG.
The Mayor took the opportunity to invite the singer to Launceston for the inaugural Tasmania Devils home game.
“Heard a little voice out the window! And wouldn’t you know it! After Katy Perry announced her love for Tassie, got her an official invite to come down for the first Devils game,” he wrote on social media.
“Even took my Mayoral card.”
The invitation comes after Perry earlier this week declared she was a proud supporter of the incoming Tasmania Devils AFL team.
“I’m barracking for the new Tasmanian team that’s coming in next year … I’m calling it now,” she said.
“Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Tassie, Tassie, Tassie. The Devils they are.”
