In a statement after the rescue, police said conditions in alpine areas “can change rapidly, particularly after dark”.

“Adequate preparation, appropriate equipment and reliable communications are essential for a safe trip,” police said.

Bushwalkers are being reminded to plan walks around their experience, fitness and the daylight left and to tell someone their route and when they expect to be back.

Police also recommend carrying warm, waterproof clothing, enough food, water and lighting, a fully charged mobile phone and, where appropriate, an emergency beacon.

Walkers should stick to marked tracks and avoid shortcuts.

Anyone who gets lost is asked to stop, stay safe and contact emergency services early.
