A drunk motorist who overtook police before ‘swerving all over’ a Tasmanian highway and narrowly avoiding other drivers has been arrested.
The Sassafras man overtook officers who were out on patrol on the Bass Highway at Don around 9pm on Saturday night before “swerving over the road” in front of them.
Acting Sergeant Samantha Hardy said the man’s antics saw him ‘only just miss’ slamming into multiple other cars.
He was pulled over and, after returning a positive alcohol test, taken to the Devonport Police Station, where he was found to be 3.74 times the legal limit with a reading of 0.187.
“As traffic flow increases and Christmas festivities increase, we must not get complacent in our duty to take care on our roads and keep each other safe,” Acting Sergeant Hardy said.
The man now faces charges for exceeding the 0.05 alcohol limit, driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and driving while disqualified.
He has also been disqualified from driving for 24 months and was bailed to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court in February.
