Parts of northern Tasmania and the Midlands could wake to sub-zero temperatures on Sunday morning.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a frost warning for the north-west coast, central north and Midlands forecast districts.
Deloraine is forecast to drop to minus two degrees, while Railton and Ross are expected to reach minus one.
Sheffield, Cressy, Campbell Town, Oatlands and Tunnack are forecast to fall to zero, while Burnie, Evandale and Prospect could reach one degree and Devonport two.
The bureau warned temperatures at ground level could be “many degrees lower” than those recorded by standard weather stations.
Even colder conditions are forecast outside the warning area, with Ben Lomond in the north-east expected to plunge to minus six, Mount Wellington to minus five and Liawenee on the Central Plateau to minus four.
The cold snap comes as a high-pressure system extends a ridge over Tasmania before moving across the state on Sunday and Monday.
Sunday is expected to be fine across most of the state after the morning frost, with light showers about the south-west and far south.
Snow is forecast above 800 metres in the morning.
More frost is expected across inland areas on Monday morning, along with patches of valley fog.
The high is forecast to move over the Tasman Sea on Tuesday, ahead of a trough crossing the state early Wednesday.
Showers are then expected to spread across most of Tasmania on Wednesday.
