Global outdoor brand Patagonia is set to make its mark in Tasmania, with plans to open a new retail store in Hobart’s Salamanca precinct.
Planning documents submitted to Hobart City Council show the environmentally minded retailer is eyeing the ground floor of 29 Salamanca Place, a space last home to a cafe.
The proposed store, located in a heritage-listed warehouse within one of Hobart’s prime tourist districts, will offer the brand’s range of outdoor apparel, gear and equipment.
According to the application, the store would take up around 191 square metres and require only internal changes to the building.
The fit-out includes removing the existing kitchen, disconnecting services and taking out a false ceiling to reveal the original one without affecting the building’s historic fabric.

The proposal argues the store is a good fit for the area, highlighting Patagonia’s strong environmental values and how they align with the planning scheme’s goals.
Heritage features are front and centre in the plans, including minimalist black signage that “maintains the original architectural heritage character of the building”.
If approved, Patagonia would join the mix of retailers, galleries, cafés and restaurants that make Salamanca Place one of Hobart’s most visited destinations.
Council is expected to make a decision on the application in the coming weeks.
