New, automated traffic enforcement cameras that can detect illegal mobile phone use and seatbelt offences are about to be rolled out for testing across Tasmania.

The State Government says the new cameras are aimed at ‘reducing Tasmanias road toll’, and will be tested throughout the month, with enforcement expected to commence mid-year following the testing period.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said dangerous drivers who break the law, risking their life and others, are on notice.

“These cameras are important because distraction and seatbelt non-compliance are a factor in 24 and nine per cent respectively of Tasmania’s fatal and serious injury crashes,” he said.

“The delivery of a new fleet of automated traffic enforcement cameras around the State is a major action in our ongoing efforts to save lives and reduce road trauma.”

Just three months into 2023 and already more than 18,000 confirmed speeding offences have been detected since new, mobile speed cameras were introduced in September last year.
