Kensington Park, a 9.3 hectare sporting ground in New Norfolk, could be sold to the state government for housing development.
Homes Tasmania is hoping to acquire the land to build social and affordable housing, as well as create residential lots for sale.
The Derwent Valley Council will vote on whether to support the sale on Thursday night, with public opinion being to be surveyed before a final decision is made.
Council officers have recommended supporting the sale, saying that the park is not a revenue-generating asset and would require significant investment for reasonable revenue generation.
“Given the nature of the development on the site and the condition of buildings, it extremely unlikely that it would be capable of reasonable revenue-generation without significant investment,” a Council officer said.

“While such a large space lends itself to the development of sporting facilities or a residential subdivision, the Derwent Valley already enjoys the provision of significant sporting facilities at the New Norfolk Sports Centre, Tynwald Park and Boyer Oval.”
“It should also be recognised that there are significant other recreation demands within the community other than active sports.”
The state government has the power to compulsorily acquire the land if necessary should the council decide not to hand it over.
“Based on the above, it is unlikely that Kensington Park will be developed by Council for sporting facilities, or an alternative use, in the short to medium term,” the officer continued.
“In addition, the need to upgrade and maintain existing facilities are of a higher priority than the construction of new facilities.”
“The sale of this land could assist with this outcome. It is also considered that, in providing for the interests of the wider community including economic development, the opportunity to facilitate social and affordable housing in a time of crisis is also a priority.”
