A man from Tasmania’s north has been charged over the alleged online grooming of a child, following an investigation by state and federal police.

The 26-year-old appeared in the Launceston Magistrates Court on October 28 charged with using a carriage service to procure a person under 16 years of age.

He was remanded in custody and will reappear in court at a later date.

The investigation was led by the Tasmania Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET), which is made up of Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police. NSW Police also assisted.

Officers began the investigation on July 30 after receiving information about the alleged online grooming of children by a person living in the George Town area.

A search was recently carried out at a home and the man was arrested.

Police will allege he communicated with children online with the intention of arranging to meet them.

“Online child sexual abuse is a serious crime,” Tasmania Police said in a statement.
