An unlicensed driver has been charged after allegedly speeding and driving under the influence of drugs in a Cambridge school zone.

Police detected the 42-year-old Sorell man travelling at 49km/h in a 40km/h school zone on Cambridge Road during a routine speed enforcement operation on Tuesday.

After being pulled over, the man underwent a roadside drug test which returned a positive result for illicit substances.

Inspector Kathy Bennett said the incident was particularly concerning given the location.

“It is incredibly disappointing that this driver not only chose to speed in an area where there are vulnerable young children, but also to drive while allegedly under the influence of an illicit substance,” she said.

“Speeding and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol is dangerous, not only for the driver but for all road users.”

Police reminded motorists that a 40km/h speed limit applies in school zones during operating times.

The same restrictions also apply within 50 metres of school buses displaying flashing amber lights.
