Police are on the hunt for a failed burglar who was “unsuccessful” in their attempt to break-in to a Launceston service station overnight.

The Shell outlet in West Launceston on Cambridge Street sustained significant damage during the incident around 5am on Monday morning.

Initial inquiries indicate the offender “tried to gain entry into the premises”, smashing both glass sliding doors at the entrance.

Police believe the offender was reportedly driving a stolen vehicle at the time and are asking anyone in the area who may have seen a 2005 Mazda Bravo ute to come forward.

“Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers Tasmania at crimestopperstas.com.au,” they said.

Taking to social media, the operators of the service station said the ‘unfortunate’ break-in had caused them “some inconvenience”.

“Everything is back to normal now and the store is up and running smoothly,” they said.
