Police arrest man after hammer attack injures two at Hobart shopping centre

A man allegedly armed with a hammer has reportedly injured two people during an attempted robbery at a Howrah shopping centre.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred just before 3:30pm on Wednesday.

The unidentified man is accused of entering the store and threatening staff members while brandishing the hammer, police said.

A staff member and a member of the public received injuries described as minor.

The hammer was seized by police, while the man fled the scene.

Officers are currently working to locate the man and take him into custody.

Police are appealing for information and have asked anyone with footage or other information to come forward.

They say information can be provided directly to 131 444 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

Updated 7:30pm, Wednesday December 18: Police have caught up with a man in his 20s in connection with the attempted armed robbery.

He has been taken into police custody. No charges have been laid at this time.
