Police say the search is focused on the Uxbridge area, a small rural locality west of New Norfolk and north-west of Hobart.
Officers began looking for the vehicle around 11:15am on Monday, when it was believed to be in the Lonnavale area in the Huon Valley.
It was seen heading towards Mount Lloyd at 11:55am, before police found it a short time later at Uxbridge.
Police said the driver was believed to have fled on foot and was being treated as a “person of interest”.

The circumstances around the vehicle’s movements and abandonment are not yet known.
The search was continuing on Monday afternoon.
