A 42-year-old man is in custody after a tense standoff at a Kingston property that shut down a street for hours on Saturday evening.
Police were called around 4:20pm after a member of the public reported a grey Nissan X-Trail driving dangerously on the Southern Outlet heading into Kingston.
Officers located the vehicle in the driveway of a property on Hawthorn Drive around 4:30pm.
The alleged driver was inside the house and no one else was home at the time.
Police including specialist resources were deployed to safely resolve the situation.
The man was taken into custody just after 7pm.
There were no injuries as a result of the incident.
Neighbours reported hearing screaming, crying and banging coming from the property during the standoff.
One resident said they saw someone driving erratically before being pepper sprayed by police.
“We saw like three cars lined up blocking the road,” one nearby resident said.
“And then apparently they were screaming and then there was an ambulance here, then they left, then just police blocking off the road and sending up the drone.”
The resident said the scene had been at a standstill for around two hours.
Police deployed drones and pushed bystanders and media back several hundred metres from the property.
The police Special Operations Group attended the scene.
Hawthorn Drive has now reopened and police have thanked residents for their patience.
