Popular swimming spots in Latrobe have been closed after routine testing found bacteria in the water.
Bells Parade and the Mersey River at Warrawee were tested ahead of increased summer activity, but will now be out of action “until further notice”.
The Latrobe Council say recent tests found high levels of enterococci, indicating the presence of faecal material and possible disease-causing bacteria.
The council has closed the sites to swimming for the foreseeable future and will require two acceptable readings before they can be reopened.
Weekly samples are being collected to monitor the water quality.
