Operations at the Port of Burnie have been impacted after the Australian Antarctic Division’s icebreaker RSV Nuyina damaged a berth over the weekend.

The incident has forced the closure of Berth 5, with TasPorts CEO Anthony Donald saying that only one vessel has been delayed as a result.

“We are working closely with our customers to minimise disruption,” Donald said.

A TasPorts spokesperson said teams are working to remove the damaged fender and make the berth safe for use again.

“Adverse weather conditions on Monday have delayed progress, however works are expected to be completed by late Tuesday,” the spokesperson said.

The RSV Nuyina, which supports Australia’s Antarctic research program, has to travel to Burnie to refuel as it can not safely fit under Hobart’s Tasman Bridge.
