A pregnant George Town woman who stole almost $400 worth of meat did it to fund her drug addiction, a court has heard.
Premium lamb cuts, scotch fillets and pork belly were taken from two supermarkets by 25-year-old Skye Jenkins, who pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing in the Launceston Magistrates Court this week.
The first heist saw Jenkins visit Coles Kings Meadows with a man on July 10, 2022, where they stole legs of lamb, rump steak and scotch fillet steaks valued at around $242.
The pair filled a backpack with the meat before giving it to a third person and leaving the store without paying.
Jenkins then went back to Coles three weeks later, this time in Mowbray, on August 4, 2022, and stole lamb roasts, eye fillets and pork belly valued at approximately $140.
According to Jenkins’ defence lawyer, she was using drugs and stole the meat because her money went towards her drug problem.
At the time of the offences, Jenkins was homeless, but she has since stopped using drugs and secured stable accommodation after learning she was pregnant.
The court ordered Jenkins to pay a compensation order to the supermarkets for the stolen goods.
The proceedings were adjourned for two years and a conviction will not be recorded if Jenkins does not commit any further offences during that time.
