A 12-storey office block proposed for Liverpool Street in the Hobart CBD has drawn nearly 200 objections, with most citing concerns over its height.
The development at the former Spotlight site will go before the Hobart City Council planning committee on Wednesday for a decision.
Council documents reveal that 188 of the 189 submissions received are objections, many of which were generated from a pre-filled form on the ‘Hobart Not Highrise’ website.
Those against the project say it would set a precedent for allowing highrise towers in central Hobart and that the proposed building is “not compatible with existing buildings in the area”.
Concerns were also raised about the loss of light and overshadowing on nearby streets, the tower’s “unreasonable” dominance of the landscape and that Hobart’s “unique values” would be eroded.
“Big shiny glass and chrome skyscrapers are not for Hobart,” summarised concerns in council documents read.
“One of the representations raised concern regarding the proposed use of the building, suggesting that is was “stupid” for it to not include apartments.”
“Comments that more medium rise development is required in the city and not overscaled proposals. Question about when the council is going to respect the wishes of its citizens and ratepayers.”
The only offical representation in support of the proposal stated that it is “exactly the sort of building we need to invigorate the city”.
Council officers have recommended approval for the 174 Liverpool Street project, saying it complies with the relevant provisions of the Hobart Interim Planning Scheme.
