A Queensland tourist has been caught driving at 171km/h in a 110km/h zone on Tasmania’s Midland Highway, clocking 61km/h over the speed limit.
Police pulled over the white Toyota Corolla hire car at Breadalbane around 1:45pm on Friday.
Officers in a BMW highway patrol vehicle intercepted the driver after detecting the speed.
The 23-year-old man was spotted overtaking several other motorists along the dual-lane highway while heading south.
He was hit with an infringement notice carrying a $1,178.75 fine, six demerit points and a four-month driving ban.

Tasmania Police said driving at such a speed “significantly increases the risk of a serious or fatal crash”.
“Anyone driving over the speed limit increases the risk not just to themselves, but to all other road users,” police said.
“Travelling at such a high speed on our roads will not be tolerated, with drivers being held to account.”
