An off-duty police officer has helped stop a drink driver in his tracks after reportedly spotting him ‘driving erratically’ on Hobart’s eastern shore overnight.
Sergeant Terry McCulloch said the officer ‘became concerned’ about the manner of driving of a green Ford Territory Sedan on the Tasman Highway at Warrane on Tuesday night and called it in.
He then assisted in coordinating the vehicle’s interception, resulting in the arrest and disqualification of the 42-year-old male driver for drink driving.
“The man was breath tested and returned a reading of 0.222, which is more than four times the legal limit,” McCulloch said.
“This driver’s behaviour clearly put the safety of others at risk, and we’re thankful for the prompt actions of the off-duty officer.”
Data released under RTI by Tasmania Police in October shows 3,639 people across Tasmania were proceeded against for alcohol and drug driving offences in the 2022-23 financial year, with a majority of them aged 25+.
