Record Number Of Rare Parrots Return To Tassie

It’s great news for the Orange-bellied Parrot population in Tassie, with a record number of birds returning for the breeding season!

74 birds have flown back to breed in Melaleuca in Southern Tasmania, a significant increase from the previous record of 70 birds in the 2021 season.

The successful program is the result of years of hard work by the Tasmanian Government and recovery team partners, as well as successful breeding in the wild population.

According to Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Roger Jaensch, 44 of the returned birds were born in the wild, with 23 of them being in their first year of life.

There was also an increase in the number of captive-bred birds returning this season, with 30 birds making the journey back to Melaleuca.

Breeding is now underway, and nest monitoring is set to begin in January 2023.
