Macquarie Point is destined to be a “vibrant mixed-use precinct”, a refreshed plan for the currently underutilised area in Hobart’s city centre states.

The latest Precinct Plan released on Thursday by the Macquarie Point Development Corporation includes the stadium, a mix of housing, offices, cafes and space for future visitor accommodation.

It will feature multiple housing types, including affordable homes for key workers in the health sector and apartments available to the general market.

“The residential development provides the opportunity to create high amenity, medium density apartments with an open north-east aspect of the River Derwent,” the plan states.

“The development will be sympathetic to the stepped topography of the foreshore and will be delivered with an activated ground floor of commercial, retail and/or food and beverage uses and enhanced public foreshore to open up and encourage public use of the space.”

The plan also includes an Aboriginal Culturally Informed Zone on the Davey Street side of the site, with “a fresh conversation” currently underway with community members as to just what it should look like.

The development will be delivered in stages over the next decade, with work on the first stage including the construction of a multipurpose stadium, the upgrade of Macquarie Wharf and Wharves 4, 5 and 6 and work on the northern access road and underground carpark.

Subsequent stages will include the development of housing options and futher port upgrades.

Sport and Events Minister Nic Street said the plan was crafted using feedback received over four months of public consultation, including over 2,200 written submissions and more than 100 meetings.

“The precinct plan was developed by the Macquarie Point Development Corporation, which I have received and approved,” Street said.

“The plan has also been shared with and accepted by the Federal Infrastructure Minister, as is required under the Federation Funding Agreement.”

The Tasmanian Government has capped its direct expenditure on the stadium, which is currently subject to the Project of State Significance process, at $375 million.
