Relief and recovery assistance activated in wake of severe flooding across St Helens

Disaster relief in the form of the Tasmanian Relief and Recovery Arrangements has been activated just two days after a severe storm that inundated much of St Helens.

Government agencies will provide assistance for essential infrastructure repairs through emergency arrangements, with federal disaster assistance also anticipated to be made available through the Disaster Funding Recovery Arrangements.

Authorities are still in the process of carrying out assessments to determine the extent of the damage, however many businesses were impacted by the event, as well as the local school.

St Helens School will remain closed until next week due to flooding damage, which submerged the power box under several feet of water.

Over 145mm of rain fell across St Helens and Scamander on Wednesday, closing roads and knocking out power and communications to thousands.

Those in need of assistance with storm damage are encouraged to contact the Break O’Day Council.
