A large number of imitation firearms, including replica pistols and rifles, have been seized from a storage facility in Tasmania’s north-west.

Detectives found the ten illegal ‘gel blasters’ during a search of a private lockup in Wynyard on Friday.

A 44-year-old man has been charged with multiple firearms offences and will face court at a later date.

A Tasmania Police spokesperson said the weapons were “improperly stored and left unconcealed”.

“Police remind members of the community that responsible storage and handling of firearms is a serious matter and when handled improperly, firearms pose serious risk to others,” they said.

“In Tasmania there is a permanent amnesty in relation to firearms.”

“This means if you are unlawfully in possession of a gel blaster and surrender it to police, no action will be taken in respect of that unauthorised possession.”

Under the Firearms Act 1996, gel blasters and any other weapon that ‘substantially duplicate’ the appearance of a firearm are illegal.
