Two bushwalkers have been rescued by helicopter after developing hypothermia while canyoning in a remote part of Tasmania’s north-west.
The group of four activated a personal locator beacon about three-quarters of the way through Machinery Creek Canyon, near Cethana, at around 4pm on Thursday.
A paramedic was winched into the rugged terrain to treat the pair before they were airlifted to safety.
The two remaining canyoners were able to complete the route on their own.
Tasmania Police Inspector Steve Jones said the decision to carry a PLB proved crucial.
“The group did the right thing by carrying a PLB and activating it when they needed help,” he said.
Jones thanked staff from Cradle Mountain Canyon for assisting with the rescue, saying the coordinated effort had helped avoid a more serious outcome.
He said the incident was a reminder of the risks posed by Tasmania’s wilderness areas, even during the warmer months.
“Conditions in Tasmania’s remote areas can change quickly and hypothermia is a real risk even this close to summer,” Jones said.
“If you’re heading into remote or rugged terrain, make sure you have the right gear, know your limits and always carry a reliable way to call for help.”
