Police and firefighters were called to Kingston Beach overnight after a member of the public reported what appeared to be a boat on fire.

But authorities have confirmed there was no boat involved.

Instead, a group of youths had set a wooden pallet alight and pushed it out into the water, with some swimming alongside it.

Tasmania Police and the Tasmania Fire Service attended the scene after the initial call.
