RSL Tasmania votes to oppose new Hobart stadium

RSL Tasmania has officially opposed the construction of an AFL stadium on Hobart’s waterfront.

The decision comes after a briefing conducted by a state government representative at the organisation’s annual general meeting on the weekend, where members were given insights into the proposed project.

However, despite the briefing, a staggering 80 percent of RSL members have voted against supporting the stadium.

The chosen location for the stadium is in close proximity to the cenotaph, a site of significant historical and emotional importance.

Under the terms of the AFL deal, the government is obligated to involve the RSL in the design process of the stadium.

John Hardie, the Chief Executive of RSL Tasmania, expressed doubts about garnering the support of RSL members for the proposed stadium.

“Unless we have some really serious, and I mean really serious, consultation, then I can’t see a way forward in which RSL will ever support it in that location,” he told ABC Radio.
