Karen Abey, Acting City Life Director at the City of Hobart, told Pulse the driver followed protocols and “quickly offloaded the contents” of the truck in the ‘safest location’ after spotting the smoke.

Firefighters were then called to extinguish the smoking pile of rubbish.

It is not yet clear how the blaze started, however an investigation will be undertaken to determine the cause.

Council staff and street sweepers were are working on clearing the debris from the street before reopening the road.

No one was injured in the incident.
