The final stage of a $3.5 million upgrade project in the Salamanca Place precinct will get underway next week.

The City of Hobart say under the project, a new plaza area, wider footpaths and zebra crossing on Castray Esplanade will be installed in a bid to give the area a “fresh contemporary feel” and make it “easier and safer for pedestrians to move around.”

Upcoming works will see the footpath in front of The Whaler widened, with new pavers installed to provide room for pedestrians and people with prams and mobility devices.

Space for the much-loved outdoor dining area will remain out the front of the restaurant, while extra lighting, CCTV cameras and zebra crossings will be installed across nearby Salamanca Place and Montpelier Retreat.

Removable bollard footings will be also be installed along the kerb of Salamanca Place to improve pedestrian safety and access when Salamanca Lawns are being used for special events.

During the works there will be some temporary lane and road closures, as well as pedestrian detours.

“The initial face of the works will see access in and out of Montpellier Retreat at Salamanca Place closed from 6am Monday 17 July for the next 4 weeks,” the City of Hobart said.

“Please follow any onsite signage and directions for your safety.”
