Long weekend crash on Sandy Bay Road leaves man in his 80s in serious condition

An elderly man has been hospitalised with serious injuries after a crash on Sandy Bay Road.

According to police, the man in his 80s crashed into an unoccupied vehicle parked on the side of the road around 2pm on Sunday.

Pulse understands he was cut free from his flipped gold Kia by firefighters and taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Police are appealing for any witnesses with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

Updated 4:05pm, Sunday January 26: Sandy Bay Road remains closed in both directions after a car flipped this afternoon.

Police say one person is in a serious condition. They have been rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital by ambulance.

2:50pm, Sunday January 26: Sandy Bay Road has been closed in both directions after a car flipped onto its roof.

The long weekend crash has blocked the Hobart road between Pearces Park and Cartwright Reserve.

Police are at the scene and are asking motorists to take the Southern Outlet to get between Kingston and Hobart.

Emergency services are understood to be working to free at least one person from the flipped vehicle.
