Body of missing swimmer recovered from Derwent River at New Norfolk

Updated 12:40am, Tuesday February 10: Police have recovered the body of a person who disappeared while swimming with friends in the Derwent River at New Norfolk on Monday evening.

The male swimmer, a 23-year-old Taiwanese national, vanished from sight shortly after 7pm while in the water off the pontoon near the New Norfolk Esplanade.

A major search operation was launched involving marine police, the rescue helicopter and police divers.

His body was located in the water shortly after 9:40pm.

Police thanked members of the public who assisted at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” a spokesperson said.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Earlier: Emergency services are searching the Derwent River near New Norfolk after a male went missing while swimming on Monday evening.

Police and a rescue helicopter were called to the New Norfolk Esplanade about 7pm following reports from concerned members of the public.

“The man was reportedly last seen swimming with friends near the pontoons when he went missing,” police said.

“The Police Dive Squad have been mobilised and are responding.”

The helicopter has been spotted making slow, low passes over sections of the river as crews search for the swimmer.

Local residents reported seeing police and ambulance crews stationed at The Esplanade while the helicopter swept up and down the waterway.

Police remain on scene and have urged anyone with information to contact 131 444.
