West Coast cut off: Lyell and Murchison highways closed due to severe weather

Tasmania’s West Coast has been cut off by road closures this morning as heavy snow, rain and downed tress impact the region.

The Lyell Highway is closed in both directions from Queenstown to Derwent Bridge and Queenstown to Strahan.

The Murchison Highway from the Zeehan Highway intersection to Rosebery is also closed.

It is not known when the roads will reopen.

Tasmania’s West Coast faces road closures due to heavy snow and rain

Tullah and Rosebery remain accessible from the north, while Derwent Bridge is the end of the road for motorists in the south.

Other roads across the state have also been closed due to snow, flooding and fallen trees, including the Highland Lakes Road, Lake Augusta Road and Pinnacle Road on kunanyi/Mount Wellington.

Several roads are listed as hazardous, with snow reported on the Lyell Highway from Ouse to Derwent Bridge and Marlborough Highway from Lyell Highway to Roscarborough Road.

Locals took to social media to say driving the roads overnight was “like a war zone of trees and debris”.
