Swimmers and boaters on Tasmania’s east coast are being urged to take care after a shark was spotted close to shore at Beaumaris.
Tasmania Police said the shark was seen about 100 metres from shore at Shelly Point.
The sighting prompted a community alert.
“Swimmers and boat users are requested to take note if in this area,” police said.
The shark’s species and size have not been confirmed.
It is the latest in a string of shark sightings around the state this year.
In March, a three-metre shark was spotted near the boat ramp at Bruny Island Cruises in Adventure Bay.
In July, a 31-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his forearm after being bitten by an estimated two-metre-long shark off Bruny Island.
The shark was reported at the time to be a broadnose sevengill.
Tasmanian waters are home to several shark species, including great white, sevengill and bronze whaler sharks.
