Most of Burnie’s CBD and some parts of South Burnie are currently in a blackout after being hit by a widespread power outage.
TasNetworks say crews are currently investigating the cause of the outage, which began around 10:30am on Friday and has left more than 700 CBD customers without electricity.
This power disruption comes as thousands of passengers disembark from the Virgin Voyages cruise ship, which docked at the Port of Burnie earlier this morning.
Tasmania Police have reported that traffic lights are not operational throughout the city and are impacting intersections on the Bass Highway at Mount Street and Wilson Street.
“Burnie motorists are asked to slow down, drive with caution and give way … while the traffic lights are out,” police say.
“Police are at the intersections conducting traffic control.”
Local store Not Just Books shared a post in the Burnie Community Noticeboard saying they remain open and “still have access to Eftpos” following the outage.
“We have torches so you can shop by torches light,” they said.
Other residents have reported that fuel stations and banks are closed while they wait for power to be restored.
