The redeveloped Silverdome will face its first test this weekend, with a back-to-back basketball double-header bringing elite competition to the venue for the first time since its $12 million upgrade.

The Tasmania JackJumpers play reigning NBL champions the Sydney Kings at the venue tonight before the Jewels take on the Flames on Saturday afternoon.

The redevelopment of the Launceston entertainment venue includes a new multi-purpose sports floor, extra spectator seating, new lighting and a big screen.

Change rooms have been refurbished, food and beverage areas upgraded and a new function room added.

Stadiums Tasmania general manager of northern venues Casey Price said the work was finished a couple of weeks ago, on time and within budget.

Sport Minister Nick Duigan said the venue had served the community for 40 years.

“The Silverdome is an essential part of Tasmania’s sporting infrastructure and these upgrades will help secure its future for years to come,” he said.

JackJumpers coach Scott Roth said the old lighting had left darkness and shadows on parts of the court and he believed the new lights were “more conducive” to the court being lit correctly.

“I think the fan experience of being in here now is gonna be at another level,” he said.

The Jewels will play five of their 11 home games this season in Launceston and six in Hobart.

Tourism Minister Roger Jaensch said the return of a Tasmanian team to the WNBL after 30 years was “a significant moment” for the state.

Jewels vice-captain Keely Froling will miss Saturday’s game with a calf injury, but said she was on track to return when the team plays at the Silverdome again in two weeks.

“It’s massive for us to have a home in the north and the Silverdome is going to be a really strong home as well, a place where the north can get behind us and celebrate their Jewels,” she said.

Price said Stadiums Tasmania would look at opportunities for short-term improvements and long-term capital investment across its venues, including UTAS Stadium.
