A bushfire near the New Town Bay Golf Course is sending smoke drifting across the River Derwent as strong winds sweep through Hobart today.
Emergency services have issued a smoke alert for Risdon Road and surrounding areas in Lutana, warning residents to expect smoke, ash and embers.
Authorities say there is “no threat to communities”.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds across the north-east, east coast, Central Plateau and parts of the upper Derwent Valley.
Wind gusts reached 85km/h in the city at 10:29am, with conditions expected to stay challenging for much of the day.

Hobart is also expected to reach 28 degrees today.
“People at higher risk from the effects of smoke, including those with medical conditions, should enact their personal plan for avoiding smoke and managing their health,” TasAlert states.
Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds this afternoon in central areas and later this evening along the east coast.
