Snow has blanketed kunanyi / Mt Wellington this morning, sending tourists and locals into a Sunday morning frenzy.

The gates on Pinnacle Road have been closed at The Springs, while council work to clear a safe path to the summit.

According to the City of Hobart, snow-chasers will need to walk for ‘around 3km’ to reach the snow.

Meanwhile, authorities are warning people of the dangers the mountain poses, after a surge of recent rescues.

Last month, a shuttle bus service was forced to assist over 90 clueless walkers who were ‘ill-prepared’.

Acting Hobart Lord Mayor Helen Burnet said the mountain is a “wild place” where things can change “really quickly”.

“Every time you go up 100 metres, you lose a degree,” she said.

The City of Hobart have called on hikers to inform others about their planned route, check the weather forecast, dress in layers, carry food and water, and ensure their mobile phones are fully charged.
