A cold, wintry blast is heading for Tasmania this afternoon – bringing with it snow, ice and hail.
While rainfall is expected to ease to showers later in the day, snowfall is forecast to occur in the south of the state to around 900 metres overnight.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned that snow will be seen as low as 400 metres over the weekend, accompanied by small hail, frosts and showers.
In anticipation of the severe weather, a road weather alert has been issued for the Central Plateau and Upper Derwent Valley regions due to the possibility of snow-covered roads above 600 metres.

A bushwalkers weather alert has also been issued, particularly for those venturing into the Western and Central Plateau areas.
