Winter is set to make a surprise comeback this week, with a cold and gusty south-westerly airstream to bring snow to the state.

Meteorologist Alex Melitsis tells Pulse moderate snowfalls are expected down to around 500 metres on Friday and throughout Saturday, mostly about the southern half of the state.

While a maximum temperature of 20 degrees is forecast for Hobart on Thursday, conditions are set to drop as low as 5 degrees in Hobart on Saturday

The Bureau of Meteorology say the wintry weather will be short lived as above average temperatures redevelop from mid next week.
