Tasmania’s largest aged care provider will close a 94-bed facility in New Town by the middle of next year.
Southern Cross Care has confirmed it will shut down Rosary Gardens as demand shifts away from residential care towards home-based services.
The organisation’s chair, Sonya Beyers, said the decision would directly impact many people but promised no resident would be left without a home.
“We wish to be clear, during and at the completion of this process none of our residents will be left without an appropriate place to live,” Beyers said.
“The well-being of our residents is our number one priority and we will work with each of them and their families and guardians as appropriate to ensure an appropriate transition arising from the closure in the middle of next year.”

Southern Cross Care said the decision reflects a broader trend in the aged care sector, with more Australians choosing to receive support in their own homes rather than move into residential facilities.
The organisation said it supports this shift and expects it to continue.
The entire St John’s Park property at New Town, which spans 3.9 hectares off Creek Road, will be sold after the closure.
Southern Cross Care’s head office, currently based at the site, will move to another location within Hobart.
Beyers said no forced redundancies were expected as part of the process.

She also said there were no plans to close any of the organisation’s other facilities across Tasmania.
Southern Cross Care employs more than 1,200 staff statewide and operates nine residential aged care homes with a combined total of more than 700 beds.
